Meet Janet Ehlers

At Strength in Members, Janet is a Senior Digital Marketing Strategist who helps clients address core issues with their web presence and email strategy. She thrives on helping our partners achieve measurable results that help turn the dial in a big way. Janet worked with a variety of healthy product companies such as Celestial Seasonings, Rudi’s Organic Bakery and Skirt Sports before joining Strength in Members.

1. What is your position at Strength in Members?  What kind of projects do you work on?

I'm a Senior Strategist! But what in the world does that mean? Well, I work on the Direct Response side of our business, helping clients with projects such as: Online Audience Growth, Executing Campaigns (like End of Year Appeals and Welcoming new names to file), Email List Segmentation, Audience Consulting, Strategies to achieve the best Email Cadence, and customizing programs to fit the client's needs.

2. How did you first get involved working with nonprofits?

Since moving to Colorado in 2008, I have worked for companies that have strong missions, primarily focusing on health and wellness. In my previous work, I was heavily involved in running nonprofit events within my organizations like the B Strong Ride and Kick Start Fitness Mentorship program.

3. What do you like about working with nonprofits, how is it different from other things you’ve done?

I feel extremely fortunate for our amazing clients. I love being able to fill in the gaps or provide expertise to our nonprofit partners that helps them turn the dial with their digital programs. Working for nonprofits is different because it is so much more fulfilling at the end of the day to help an organization raise money to help others, rather than help a company earn money for themselves.

4. What’s your background?  (Where are you from?  Where did you go to school? Hobbies?)

I'm from Yakima, Washington (apple country!) and am a complete fruit snob. Sunny, dry, and in the middle of nowhere. For my undergraduate degree, I headed to DC to attend The George Washington University and after spending 8 years on the East Coast (DC & Boston), I moved to Boulder to settle down and complete my MBA at the University of Colorado. 

5. What’s your favorite project you worked on?

Oh, it has to be the distributor project with the Sierra Club! We built a social tool that integrated with their email program to help them launch and gain traffic for their new site, addup.org.

6. What’s your favorite book?  What’s your favorite song?

Book: The Color Purple by Alice Walker

Song: Domino by Van Morrison.

7. Do you have an interesting fact about yourself?

Oh my...I'm a well socialized introvert. People are awesome and crazy creatures, but I also love my alone time.

8. What do you do when not at work? Hobbies?

When outside, I love to hike and ski. However, if it's a hunker down kind of a day, you can find me quilting, cooking, curled up with a good book, or binging on Mad Men.

9. What trends do you see in the non-profit sector that your think are important for the next 5-10 years?

Technological platforms are going to change dramatically in the next 5-10 years. There will better data flows between Luminate/Salsa/Engaging Networks and Raiser's Edge and Sales Force. Email platforms will become more sophisticated and be able to target audiences on a higher level. Therefore, organizations will need to be prepared with a clean list and strong digital plan or else they might be left in the dust!
