SiM Interviews: Meet Mike

Nonprofit web developer Mike Pace

Meet Mike

At Strength in Members, Mike is a web producer and works to develop technology tools that support nonprofits digital fundraising and lead generation efforts.  Prior to working with Strength in Members, Mike was an independent web developer who worked with a number of clients in the nonprofit space building numerous tools and websites.  He also is a recent graduate of Galvanize!

1. What is your position at Strength in Members?  What kind of projects do you work on?

I'm a Web Producer. I work with the digital marketing strategists and put all the digital elements together, making sure they work as planned. So I build landing pages, email templates, and other digital marketing tools for our clients. If it involves HTML & CSS, I'm probably responsible for the way it looks and works.

2. How did you first get involved working with nonprofits?

Before I started with Strength in Members, I spent several years as a freelance web developer and worked with plenty of organizations in the nonprofit space.

3. What do you like about working with nonprofits?  How is it different from other things you've done?

I'm drawn to these types of organizations because a lot of them have great missions and execute them perfectly, but they struggle with raising awareness online. So I found that my work went further and had a bigger impact than in the for profit world.

4. What’s your background?  (Where are you from?  Where did you go to school? Hobbies?)

I'm originally from Texas, but I've been go so long my nationalistic pride for the place has diminished greatly. I've spent most of my adult life in Montana and I find Colorado a good fit for me these days.

5. What’s your favorite project you worked on?

I'm working on an email acquisition app that I'm really excited about. It's definitely been a challenge, but has also been a a great experience and I'm looking forward to it's launch for our clients very soon.

6. What’s your favorite book?  What’s your favorite song?

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. I don't read to be entertained. I read to be thrown across a room and left curled up in a fetal position. Blood Meridian does it every time.

As for a song, its a tough one, but you can't go wrong with Kick Out The Jams by MC5.

7. Do you have an interesting fact about yourself?

I've seen Bigfoot.

8. What do you do when not at work? Hobbies?

I read novels for breakfast, do crossfit to help remind me of my mortality and find a disproportionate amount of pleasure looking at birds.

9. What trends do you see in the non-profit sector that your think are important for the next 5-10 years?

The tools to reach donors are definitely becoming more sophisticated, allowing a new degree of audience targeting that was unthinkable just a few years ago. These developments will only grow and become easier for organizations to utilize fully. So it's important for nonprofits to stay up to date with the technology available.

10. How can people reach you?
