What is #GivingTuesday and how can it help your charity fundraising events this holiday season?
Giving Tuesday began in 2012 in an effort to make a day following the well known Black Friday and Cyber Monday events dedicated to philanthropy rather than consumption. Although still in its infancy, Giving Tuesday has gained significant traction on social media and last year grew over 148%. In short: It could be huge for your digital fundraising efforts this holiday season!
What does this mean for my non-profits fundraising events?
Using the Giving Tuesday hashtag on your social media and promotional materials will allow your charity to become a part of the Giving Tuesday movement and to benefit from the existing social media buzz which primarily consists of people looking to contribute to charities. Another way to attack Giving Tuesday is to create a digital fundraising campaign specifically dedicated to the day and use it as a way to increase donor engagement and to encourage your donors give early in the holiday season, before they have spent all their disposable income on presents, food and other holiday items.
Will I really get donations?
It's tough to say but REMEMBER, Giving Tuesday consists of thousands of people interested in giving money, sometimes for the entire year, on this one day! If you can get your charity or your charity's fundraising campaign to trend with the #GivingTuesday social media presence, these people will learn about your cause and may direct all or part of their donation on Tuesday toward your charity!
